Performance Improvement

Performance coaching is appropriate when a team member is either performing a skill poorly or you feel they can achieve higher levels of performance with additional support.
Performance coaching is less clear cut than skills coaching. The sequence of events is more general and requires additional commitment from the employee. The coaching process is more concerned with gaining that commitment.

The commonly used steps are:

  1. Identify the performance problem or area for improvement
  2. Analyse current performance and agree on a proposal to improve
  3. Identify the required level of performance
  4. Discuss any concerns the employee has (adjust the performance level if necessary)
  5. Agree on a program to reach the agreed performance level
  6. Implement the program – adjust skill errors, skills practice, provide expert training, concentrated experience
  7. Follow up the program with an evaluation of performance levels
  8. Provide feedback and congratulations on improvements achieved.

The exact nature of the development program will depend upon the type of role involved. It could be additional practice, expert training, external study or simply more exposure to the task.
