History of AIM Victoria & Tasmania

The history of AIM is extensive, diverse and has always been at the front line of education to industry, helping managers, supervisors, and at the beginning, foremen, to reach their full potential.

It all began in 1938 with a group of young men who had completed a Foremanship Course at Melbourne Technical College meeting and deciding to form an Association through which they could maintain contact and develop their knowledge of management principles and practices.

In 1939 The Melbourne Technical College Foremanship Association was established and in 1940, renamed the Industrial Management Association of Australia.

1941 and the idea of starting an Institute of Industrial Management was presented to selected leaders of industry. The primary role of the Institute would be the education of its members through conferences, lectures, discussions and association. In August of that year, the Industrial Management Association dissolved itself and re-formed as the Institute of Industrial Management (IIM), incorporated in 1945.

It was the strong conviction of John Storey and the other industrialists who founded the Institute that Australia’s economic prosperity depends on improving the productivity of manufacturing industry and the key to improved productivity is raising the performance of management.

By 1949 The Institute of Industrial Management had branches in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong but their activities were limited to improving the practice of management in the manufacturing industry. However, as other areas of the Australian post-war economy, such as the tertiary sector, the service sector and the Public Service, expanded and become more aware of the need to improve their approach to management, the Institute resolved to broaden its scope to include these and other sectors. On September 28 1949 it was agreed that the names of the various Institutes would be, Australian Institute of Management followed by the name of each individual state, or its capital city.

In 1968 it was agreed that The Australian Institute of Management, Melbourne be changed officially to The Australian Institute of Management, Victoria as their activities had extended throughout regional Victoria.

2001 marked the 60th birthday of The Australian Institute of Management and also the merger of the AIM Victorian and Tasmanian Divisions. The organisation became The Australian Institute of Management, Victoria & Tasmania.
