From negotiating Australia’s contributions to the World Bank to driving one of Australia’s most successful aid organisations, CEO of CARE Australia Dr Julia Newton-Howes is known for her passionate leadership and drive to overcome global poverty.
She became Chief Executive of CARE Australia in October 2007 and has since then focused on ensuring gender equality and women’s empowerment are central to CARE’s programs. She has emphasised the importance of measuring the impact of CARE’s work, on improving systems to ensure effective use of funds and on growing the number of Australians who understand the importance of supporting women to overcome global poverty.
Julia is on the Board of CARE International and is Vice President of the Australian Council for Overseas Aid (ACFID). Prior to joining CARE Australia, she was a senior executive with AusAID, responsible for negotiating Australia’s contributions to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank while also managing aid to other multilateral organisations and aid to Africa.
Born in India, raised in Zimbabwe and educated in the UK, Julia is a major driving force behind the fight to overcome global poverty.
